Description
Exceptional MS65 1911 Saint-Gaudens Twenty
1911 $20 MS65 PCGS. CAC. This is a beautiful example of a rare and underrated coin. The 1911 double eagle is surprisingly difficult to locate at the Gem level. In The Official Red Book of Auction Records 1995-2003, Jeff Garrett and John Dannreuther found only six auction records for a 1911 double eagle in MS65 and none higher. David Akers notes that a large hoard of 1911 twenties appeared on the market in the 1990s but Gem quality coins were noticeably absent. The present example is fully struck with exquisite detail on all the design elements. The coin has exceptional luster, a quality not found on many coins of this year. The fields are pristine and the only blemish worthy of mention is a thin scratch on Liberty's outstretched arm. Vivid, orange-gold color radiates from the coin's superb surfaces. In addition to its obvious qualities, this coin has all the subtle intangibles that make for remarkable eye appeal. This high-end Gem is a rare opportunity for the discerning collector. Population: 33 in 65, 9 finer (7/08).(Registry values: N4719)
