Description

1911 Double Eagle, MS66
Fully Struck, Nearly Unimprovable

1911 $20 MS66 PCGS. Luminous yellow-gold surfaces are awash in vibrant mint frost. The devices are nothing short of fully struck, and eye appeal is immaculate. There are only a couple of trivial flecks on the lower reverse, and this lack of abrasions is quite unusual for this issue that is common overall. Most examples were exported to European markets, either directly from New York to London or through Ottawa, Canada. Those pieces that avoided melting overseas were subjected to rough handling, explaining why nearly all 1911 double eagles are found in MS64 or lower condition. Gems are scarce, and survivors at this impressive grade level are significant condition rarities bested by only a handful of coins in MS66+ and MS67. PCGS Population: 26 in 66 (6 in 66+), 2 finer (3/26).
