    1911-D/D Twenty Dollar, MS66
    FS-501, HA-3

1911-D/D $20 FS-501 MS66 NGC. Dozens of minor date and mintmark variants exist in the Saint-Gaudens twenty dollar series -- most of which were newly discovered by Roger Burdette in the Heritage-published reference Saint-Gaudens Double Eagles. The 1911-D/D was discovered by Walter Breen in the 1950s, and it is so obvious one has to wonder why it wasn't discovered before. The FS-501 equivalent in the Burdette reference is HA-3: "Large D is repunched left of the original position by about 25% of its width. A tiny part of the original mintmark's upper serif is visible above the stronger D." This is a bright, radiantly lustrous example that shows even reddish-gold color and minimal abrasions. Census: 42 in 66 (2 in 66+, 1 in 66 ), 4 finer (10/19).
