Description
Brilliant MS66 1911-D/D Double Eagle
1911-D/D $20 MS66 NGC. FS-501. The Denver Mint (actually, via the Philadelphia Mint die shop) switched from the Wide D seen on the 1910-D double eagles to a Small D in 1911, seen here double-punched as though for emphasis. While this variety is not rare, it is seldom seen so fine. This Premium Gem offers brilliant, cascading luster over warm orange-gold fields. The well-executed strike, while normal for the issue, never fails to appeal, and the relative paucity of marks puts this piece near the top of the Condition Census. NGC has certified 26 examples of the FS-501 in MS66, with two pieces finer (6/10).Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 26FK, Variety PCGS# 145010, Base PCGS# 9158, GSID# 393347)
