Description

Blazing 1911-D/D Double Eagle, FS-501, MS66

1911-D/D $20 MS66 NGC. FS-501. This 1911-D/D is certified as such using NGC's Variety Plus attribution. The 1911-D and 1911-D/D issues use a smaller mintmark than the 1910-D, which was the year the Mint (Philadelphia, not Denver, which made the mintmark punches and dies for the branch mints) last used the Wide D variant. On the 1911-D/D, the broad repunching east of the subsequent and final punch makes the mintmark appear much broader than on the regular issue. This is among the handful of finest certified at either service, with blazing orange-gold luster and premium eye appeal. Census (for FS-501): 22 in 66, 2 finer (9/09).
