1911-D/D $20 MS67 NGC. FS-501. Certified as FS-1911.5 on the holder, the famous repunched mintmark is classified as FS-501 in the fourth edition of the Cherrypickers' Guide. The remnants of an earlier D can be easily observed to the right of the primary mintmark on this interesting high-end example. The repunched mintmark variety is often seen on examples of the 1911-D, an available date from a mintage of 846,500 pieces.
While this date is readily available in lower Mint State grades, Superb Gem examples are rare. The present coin exhibits sharp definition on all design elements, with slightly granular texture, and vibrant frosty mint luster. The surfaces are a light orange-gold, with bright green highlights. Census: as a D/D there are only 2 in 67, 0 finer (12/10).
