Description

1914 Double Eagle, MS65
Conditional Rarity in Gem and Finer

1914 $20 MS65 PCGS. The strike is boldly rendered. Satiny orange-gold luster blankets each side, while a loupe is needed to locate a few trivial marks. This combination of stunning attributes led to PCGS's assignment of the MS65 grade, a feat achieved by few 1914 double eagles. Many of the surviving examples originated from a hoard that was released over time, suggesting transport and long-term storage that transmitted bag marks onto many of the examples, contributing to the lower average grade of the surviving examples. Recently auctioned Gem PCGS examples reach well into five figures for pleasing, well-struck coins. The present coin is equally appealing and worthy of a comparable bid. PCGS Population: 54 in 65 (7 in 65+), 7 finer (11/25).
