Description

1914 Twenty Dollar Saint-Gaudens, MS66
Condition Census Rarity

1914 $20 MS66 NGC. The Philadelphia Mint struck just 95,250 double eagles in 1914, beginning coinage late in the year, in September, with the final delivery from the Coiner on December 29th. These coins were struck primarily as backing for gold certificates, and few circulated. In fact, from this point forward the double eagle denomination in general served only a limited domestic commercial purpose, and the majority of the coins struck either went into foreign trade payments or sat in Mint vaults.

For the 1914, Mint State pieces survive mainly in MS64 and lower grades, with any coin grading even MS65 being scarce-to-rare. The finest pieces are seven MS66 coins at PCGS (one of which is Plus designated) and two at NGC (12/25). The last of these to appear in our auctions was the Simpson PCGS specimen, which we handled in our August 2022 Signature, where it realized $132,000.

The present NGC Premium Gem is radiantly lustrous, yielding rich butter-gold hues with hints of rose and orange. The torch is bold, and the border stars get progressively sharper toward 12 o'clock while being weak adjacent to the landscape. The obverse shows only a few microscopic marks, none of which are obtrusive. On the reverse, a tiny tick beneath the NT in TWENTY will serve as a pedigree marker while smaller marks are hidden within the eagle's plumage. Overall eye appeal is excellent. Given the rarity of any 1914 double eagle in this lofty grade, the current coin represents an important opportunity for the advanced Registry collector. NGC Census: 2 in 66, 0 finer (11/25).
