Description

Elusive, Desirable Gem 1915 Twenty
Nearly Unimprovable

1915 $20 MS65 NGC. Although the 1915 Philadelphia double eagle is a middling series scarcity in the lower Mint State grades, with an original production recorded at 152,000 business strikes, it becomes a notable rarity at the Gem level. The swirling mint frost on this lovely coin is much more pronounced than expected for a P-mint Saint-Gaudens double eagle. The medium orange-gold coloration and a good strike, with a balanced appearance on both sides and minimal contact marks, make this an appealing and desirable example. There are a few dozen total certified in MS65 at NGC and PCGS combined, from which must be subtracted a generous factor for duplications and crossovers. The bottom line here is a coin that is essentially unimprovable. Census: 39 in 65, 1 finer (4/09).(Registry values: N4719)
