Description

1915 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle, MS65
Low Mintage, Conditionally Rare

1915 $20 MS65 PCGS. The 1915 Saint-Gaudens double eagle has a the ninth-lowest mintage in the series. The United States put restrictions on the circulation of gold coinage during the First World War, and production was correspondingly curtailed during that time. Roger Burdette explains: "Gold circulation, including coin and certificates, rapidly declined as the Treasury sequestered remaining gold coin and certificates from circulation. Pre-war gold circulation patterns remained, but the volumes were very low, with paper currency backed by securities replacing gold certificates." Most 1915 double eagles were shipped to Europe, and the typical example at PCGS and NGC grades just shy of MS62. An attractive Gem is the best nearly any collector, no matter how well-financed, can hope to acquire, as there is but a single MS66 coin at NGC and three Premium Gems at PCGS (9/25). This condition rarity boasts lively luster that illuminates boldly impressed relief elements. Light yellow-gold surfaces show minimal field marks, one of which inconsequentially obscures a portion of the Capitol dome. An excellent representative in all regards. Population: 62 in 65 (7 in 65+), 3 finer (8/25).
