Description

1915 Double Eagle, MS65
Borderline Conditional Rarity in Gem

1915 $20 MS65 PCGS. This solidly struck and brightly lustrous amber-gold double eagle displays glints of orange in the fields. The devices are clean overall with only a small, solitary flaw on Liberty's left (facing) leg.

American gold coins had assumed a prominent role in international commerce in the years leading up to the Great War. With the sudden disruption of commerce due to the conflict, overall demand for double eagles fell. The combined production for all Mints fell from just over 2 million pieces in 1914 to only 729,500 in 1915. Philadelphia Mint coins comprised just 152,000 of this total, making this issue scarce overall. This unavailability is magnified at the Gem level, with Garrett and Guth (2006) describing this issue as "quite a challenge" in that state of preservation. PCGS has only awarded the MS65 grade 62 times and the MS65+ grade seven times, with three finer. NGC lists 41 certifications in 65, with just a single example numerically finer (10/25). These sparse populations underscore the borderline conditional rarity of this issue.
