    Description

    Single Finest-Graded 1915 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle, MS66

1915 $20 MS66 NGC. According to the catalog of the 2007 Central States Auction, held in Milwaukee by Heritage Auction Galleries: "The 1915 double eagle, with a mintage of 152,000 pieces, is readily available in grades through Mint State 64, but becomes a challenge in MS65, where only 70 or so pieces have been certified by NGC and PCGS combined. No finer examples have been seen by either service (3/07)."
At some point, within the past 18 months, the situation has changed. This magnificent specimen is now the single finest-graded example of the 1915, designated as MS66 by NGC, with none finer at either service (11/08).
Well struck with essentially pinpoint accuracy on the design elements, including the frequently-challenging fingers, hair tresses, and Capitol building, on the obverse. The striking definition is equally sharp on the eagle's breast feathers and the sun's rays, on the lower reverse. The surfaces are splendidly preserved, and reveal very little in the way of coin-to-coin contact.
Perhaps the most visually alluring aspect of the piece is its beautiful, subtly variegated coloration. This is revealed in shades of rose-gold and lime-green, which are illuminated by satiny mint frost across both sides. The result is an undeniably compelling combination; with great technical merit and vast eye appeal both contributing to the Premium Gem grade of this superior representative. It may be many years before this or any other MS66 example appears again in a public auction format. (Registry values: N1)
