1921 Double Eagle, AU55
1921 $20 AU55 PCGS. The first of the great Philadelphia
Saint-Gaudens double eagle melt rarities is the 1921, which was
paid out only in small quantities in the dozen years before
Franklin Delano Roosevelt's gold recall executive order. Many
survivors remain in Mint State, which is useful for collectors in
that grade range, but the issue offers relatively few opportunities
to complete a set in circulated condition.
Significant Melt Rarity
This is an unusual lightly worn representative of the issue, still plenty lustrous in honey-to-yellow fields but more softly struck than often seen with circular areas of wear on the highest design elements. Lightly abraded on the obverse with a few longer cuts hidden in the feathers on the reverse eagle. Population: 15 in 55, 71 finer (11/13).
