Description

1921 Double Eagle, AU55
Significant Melt Rarity

1921 $20 AU55 PCGS. The first of the great Philadelphia Saint-Gaudens double eagle melt rarities is the 1921, which was paid out only in small quantities in the dozen years before Franklin Delano Roosevelt's gold recall executive order. Many survivors remain in Mint State, which is useful for collectors in that grade range, but the issue offers relatively few opportunities to complete a set in circulated condition.

This is an unusual lightly worn representative of the issue, still plenty lustrous in honey-to-yellow fields but more softly struck than often seen with circular areas of wear on the highest design elements. Lightly abraded on the obverse with a few longer cuts hidden in the feathers on the reverse eagle. Population: 15 in 55, 71 finer (11/13).
From The Douglas Martin Collection.(Registry values: N7079) (NGC ID# 26G2, PCGS# 9172)

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens as Illustrated by the Morse and Duckor Collections
Revised Edition by James L. Halperin, Mark R. Borckardt, Mark Van Winkle, Jon Amato, and Gregory J. Rohan, with special contributor David W. Akers

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens is an issue-by-issue examination of these two artistically inspired series of gold coins. Each date and mintmark is reviewed with up-to-date information, much of which has never been previously published. The book is based on two extraordinary collections: The Phillip H. Morse collection and the Dr. and Mrs. Steven L. Duckor collection.
