Brilliant Uncirculated 1921 Twenty Dollar--A Premier Rarity in the Saint-Gaudens Series

1921 $20 MS61 NGC. Federal records indicate that the Philadelphia Mint delivered 528,500 Double Eagles in 1921. We do not know what became of most of these coins (most likely they were melted), but we do know that the 1921 is now one of the premier rarities in the Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle series. In this regard, the 1921 compares favorably to the 1920-S, although the edge goes to the P-mint issue in higher grades. Writing in 1988, Breen stated that perhaps 15-18 1921 Double Eagles are extant. The emergence of coins in European hoards has no doubt increased the surviving population over the last 14 years, but this issue is still one of the rarest in the 20th century gold series. What's more, at least half of the extant population is located at the circulated grade levels, and NGC has seen just 31 Mint State representatives (1/02). This BU survivor is boldly impressed throughout with a satiny overall sheen and modest cartwheel luster effects. Rich green-gold and orange-gold colors blend together over moderately abraded features. An important bidding opportunity for either the Double Eagle or 20th century gold specialist. (NGC ID# 26G2, PCGS# 9172)

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens as Illustrated by the Morse and Duckor Collections
Revised Edition by James L. Halperin, Mark R. Borckardt, Mark Van Winkle, Jon Amato, and Gregory J. Rohan, with special contributor David W. Akers

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens is an issue-by-issue examination of these two artistically inspired series of gold coins. Each date and mintmark is reviewed with up-to-date information, much of which has never been previously published. The book is based on two extraordinary collections: The Phillip H. Morse collection and the Dr. and Mrs. Steven L. Duckor collection.
