    1921 Saint-Gaudens Twenty, MS61
    Key Series Date
    Seldom Seen Finer

1921 $20 MS61 NGC. No double eagles were struck until November of 1921, when a small mintage of 90,000 pieces was accomplished. A larger delivery of 438,500 coins was achieved the following month, making a respectable total for the year, but none of the coins were released to the general public. No other gold denominations were struck at all that year, and the double eagles were intended to serve strictly as currency reserves. Accordingly, the great majority of the mintage remained in storage in Treasury vaults and Federal Reserve Banks until the Gold Recall of 1933, when they were melted and stored as ingots in the Fort Knox Bullion Repository.

A few coins were eventually released to well-connected collectors by Mint or Treasury officials through unofficial channels, the source for most high-grade coins we know about today. A few were also released into circulation, as the issue is one of the few Saint-Gaudens double eagles that is seen more often in circulated grades than Mint State. No large number of 1921 double eagles was ever found in foreign holdings, but David Akers remembers receiving as many as six specimen in a single shipment from Paul Wittlin, the European buyer for Jim Kelly and Paramount. Finally, research conducted by Dr. Charles W. Green in Mint records in the 1930s indicated that only 21 specimens of the 1921 double eagle had been released to the general public through official channels. Today, no more than 50-60 are extant in Mint State grades, with a like number of surviving circulated specimens.

The present coin is an attractive MS61 example, with well-detailed design elements and vibrant mint luster. The vivid green and orange-gold surfaces are lightly abraded for the grade, and this coin possesses ample eye appeal. This offering represents an important opportunity to acquire one of the classic rarities in 20th century coinage. Census: 17 in 61, 20 finer (6/13).(Registry values: N7079) (NGC ID# 26G2, PCGS# 9172)
