Description

Appealing 1922-S Twenty, MS64

1922-S $20 MS64 PCGS. More than 2.5 million 1922-S double eagles were minted, but most were melted just over a decade later, as massive melts of gold coins took place in the mid 1930s. Compare mintages and populations of the 1922 and 1922-S issues to understand the effect of the 1930s gold melts. In all grades, PCGS has certified just over 1,000 submissions of 1922-S twenties, while the same service has certified more than 30,000 1922 double eagles, an issue with half the mintage.
This attractive piece has frosty butter-yellow surfaces with few abrasions on either side. The strike is bold and the eye appeal is excellent. PCGS has only certified 12 finer examples of this issue (9/09).(Registry values: N2998)
