Extremely Scarce Gem 1922-S Double Eagle

1922-S $20 MS65 PCGS. Since several small European holdings have been repatriated to the United States in recent decades, the 1922-S Double Eagle has become somewhat available in the lower Mint State grades. Several hundred coins grading through MS 64 are now known, but despite this influx of average to Choice quality Uncirculated pieces, strict Gem representatives remain near the upper echelon of Saint-Gaudens rarity rankings.
The surfaces of this wondrously preserved 1922-S display shimmering yellow-golden brilliance with a slight reddish tinge and essentially mark-free features. A few faint alloy spots within the sun's rays to the left of Liberty are nearly expected on examples of this issue. It has been nearly four years since we last offered an example of this quality, that being an NGC MS65 in our June 2000 Bullet Sale, and it is the first PCGS certified MS65 to ever come our way. Population: 5 in 65, 1 finer (10/03).
    From a Magnificent Collection of Double Eagles. (#9174) (Registry values: P1, N30000) (NGC ID# 26G4, PCGS# 9174)

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens as Illustrated by the Morse and Duckor Collections
Revised Edition by James L. Halperin, Mark R. Borckardt, Mark Van Winkle, Jon Amato, and Gregory J. Rohan, with special contributor David W. Akers

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens is an issue-by-issue examination of these two artistically inspired series of gold coins. Each date and mintmark is reviewed with up-to-date information, much of which has never been previously published. The book is based on two extraordinary collections: The Phillip H. Morse collection and the Dr. and Mrs. Steven L. Duckor collection.

If my clients were to auction something of significance, having Mike as the auctioneer would be a deal maker as far as I am concerned.
