Description

Lustrous Superb Gem 1923-D Double Eagle

1923-D $20 MS67 NGC. The 1923-D is the archetypal Saint-Gaudens issue for collectors who desire a mintmarked piece in the finest grade possible. Fortunately, examples are available up to the Superb Gem level, and NGC has even certified one specimen in MS68. The 39 examples certified by NGC at this level make it the commonest mintmarked issue in MS67, with the 1911-D a close second, at 31 coins. Radiant, glorious cartwheel luster over the orange-gold surfaces is this coin's chief attribute, complementing pristine preservation and the bold strike normally seen.(Registry values: N4719)
