Description

1923-D Double Eagle, MS67
Vibrant Luster and Rich Toning
Nearly Unimprovable

1923-D $20 MS67 PCGS. Vivid mint luster and vibrant, orange-gold color dominate the stunning surfaces of this Superb Gem. Smooth, satinlike fields surround well-struck devices. On the reverse, bold cracks run parallel to the lower rim through the sun -- a characteristic noted by recent research by Roger Burdette, which occurs with regularity on several 1923-D reverse dies. While the obverse is free of the die cracks often seen on this issue, it does display slight repunching on the mintmark.

This Superb Gem 1923-D remains encapsulated in its Generation 3.1 green label holder, narrowing down its certification date to between March 1993 and September 1998. This is the last mintmarked Saint-Gaudens double eagle that is available at the Superb Gem level, but it is even scarce in this state of preservation, with many more examples certified MS66. Finer examples are nearly unavailable. PCGS lists a sole MS67+, with none finer, and NGC has awarded four 67+, one 67?, and one 68 grade (10/25). This makes the present offering a rare opportunity to obtain a virtually unimprovable example of this issue.
