Description

1924-D Twenty Dollar, MS64
Few Pieces Known Finer

1924-D $20 MS64 PCGS. While the Philadelphia issue of this year is famously as common as it gets, the 1924-D Saint-Gaudens double eagle is a starkly contrasting rarity in high grade. Although more than 3 million pieces were produced, most of this production figure was apparently melted in the mid-1930s, following President Roosevelt's Gold Recall executive order. Any Mint State example can be considered a better-date coin in the series, and most exist in grades of MS62 to MS64, finer pieces rare. This near-Gem example displays a bold strike and vibrant honey-gold luster, with just a few abrasions noted that prevent full MS65 classification. Just 15 submissions are numerically finer at PCGS (6/23).(Registry values: N4719)
