1924-D Saint-Gaudens Twenty, MS64
Rarely Seen in Finer Grades
1924-D $20 MS64 PCGS. From a substantial mintage of more
than three million pieces, the 1924-D Saint-Gaudens double eagle
has always been an elusive issue. Most of the coins were held in
Mint vaults or Federal Reserve Banks until the Gold Recall of 1933,
and subsequently melted into gold bars for storage at Fort Knox.
Some coins were sent to the New York Assay Office and used for
international payments. Comparatively few reached circulation in
this country and the issue was believed to be quite rare in the
1940s. Fortunately, some of the exported coins were returned to
this country, beginning about 1950, and the supply has been
considerably augmented since then. The 1924-D is still scarce in
MS64 condition, and very rare in finer grades. The coin offered here is an attractive Choice specimen, with sharply detailed design elements and vibrant mint luster throughout. The well-preserved orange-gold surfaces display some highlights of red, with no flaws that merit individual mention. Eye appeal is terrific. PCGS has graded 11 numerically finer examples (2/17).(Registry values: N4719)
