1924-D Condition Rarity Twenty Dollar, MS65

1924-D $20 MS65 PCGS. Although minted in sufficient numbers (over 3 million pieces), David Bowers, in his Guide Book of Double Eagle Gold Coins, (2004) writes that: "Most were probably retained in the United States and melted in the mid-1930s. However, at least a couple thousand were exported. Today, the 1924-D is quite scarce." The typical survivor is rather heavily abraded and most often grades from high-end AU through mid-grade Uncirculated. A coin grading MS64 is about as nice as a collector can hope to acquire, as examples in better condition are far and few between (PCGS and NGC have to date certified 15 Gems, and only three pieces finer). Moreover, the issue varies in striking quality, perhaps because of what Bowers suggests: "The dies seem to have been kept in service for a long time during the production runs for this high-mintage date."
The MS65 example being offered here displays an above-average strike, particularly in the peripheral areas, and on the fingers of Liberty's left (right-facing) hand, on her toes, and on the eagle's breast feathers. Intense luster and apricot-gold patina accented with traces of lime-green adorns the surfaces on both sides. A few very minor marks scattered about do not distract and are mentioned solely for the sake of accuracy. A minute mark on the sun beneath the N of IN will help to pedigree the piece. Population: 5 in 65, 2 finer (11/06).
