Attractive 1924-S Double Eagle, MS64
1924-S $20 MS64 NGC. During the first half of the 20th century, the 1924-S was considered the rarest Saint-Gaudens double eagle. The Pierce Collection example was the first to appear at public auction, as lot 711 in the 1947 ANA auction. Abe Kosoff's lot description took 17 lines to describe the virtues of the issue, which was only 23 years old at the time! Fortunately, later numismatists found specimens of the 1924-S included in several hoards that surfaced in Europe in the 1950s and 1960s. Today the coin is still considered scarce, with David Akers ranking it the 14th-rarest issue in the 55-coin series. Most survivors are in lower Mint State grades, and the typical example has numerous bagmarks and abrasions. Gem specimens are still extremely rare. The present coin is a pleasing example of this scarce date. The fields are much better than average, with a minimal number of abrasions for the grade. The devices are virtually free from distractions. Unbroken, frosty mint luster accents the bright, yellow-gold color. The mystique of its once-great rarity still clings to the 1924-S, and the discerning collector will recognize this near-Gem example as a singular opportunity.(Registry values: N4719)
