Description
1924-S Double Eagle, Sharply Struck MS64
Only Three Finer at PCGS
1924-S $20 MS64 PCGS. CAC. The original mintage of the
1924-S double eagle (nearly 3 million pieces) was largely melted in
the 1930s. Fortunately for collectors, a thousand or so survived in
Paris and Swiss banks. PCGS has graded 475 examples, mostly in the
MS62 to MS64 range. Gem specimens are rare, making the present
near-Gem the finest that is likely to be encountered by most
collectors. Apricot-gold surfaces are imbued with hints of light
green and display pleasing luster. The design elements are sharply
struck throughout. A few minor grazes prevent Gem classification.
Both sides exude great eye appeal. PCGS has seen a mere 3 pieces
finer (11/13).(Registry values: N4719)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 26G9, PCGS# 9179, Greysheet# 10179)
