Description

1924-S Double Eagle, MS64+
Practically Unobtainable Any Finer

1924-S $20 MS64+ PCGS. As is true for so many branch mint double eagles of the 1920s, the reported production total of 2.9 million coins for the 1924-S twenty bears no relation to its collectibility. In reality, nearly the entire mintage was held back in vaults and ended up in the melting pot after the 1933 Gold Recall. The 1924-S was even regarded as one of the great rarities for a time before small quantities began to trickle back into the country from overseas holdings. Today, this San Francisco issue is merely scarce with about 1,000 pieces believed extant in all grades. However, there are only ten submissions that grade higher than this Plus-designated near-Gem at PCGS (9/22). Lively mint frost washes over clean peach-gold surfaces. A couple of small, well-hidden marks on Liberty's drapery probably prevent an even higher assessment.(Registry values: N4719)
