1924-S $20 MS64 PCGS Secure. CAC. The 1924-S double eagle at one time was believed to be the single rarest issue in the series. Iconic dealer B. Max Mehl of Fort Worth, Texas, wrote at one point that he believed only three examples existed. As an example of the former rarity of this issue, Mehl in June 1941 cataloged the collection of William Forrester Dunham (1857-1936). The collection contained an 1802 half dime, an 1804 silver dollar, and an 1822 half eagle (three known)--but lacked a 1924-S double eagle.
This lovely, upper-end coin displays frosted, yellow-gold surfaces with a hint of reddish patina. The strike is sharp, if not completely full, and the only marks of any note are in a small cluster at the bottom of the torch. Several curious, short die cracks occur between the rays on the lower reverse. This is an issue that is almost never seen at the Gem level, as evinced by the PCGS population of three finer--two in MS65, one in MS67 (8/10).(Registry values: N4719)
