Description

    Near-Gem 1924-S Double Eagle
Condition Rarity, Three Finer at PCGS

1924-S $20 MS64 PCGS. The 1924-S is one of a number of "former great rarities," although probably the most extreme example, within the Saint-Gaudens double eagle series. David Akers wrote in the Duckor Collection catalog:

"In the past 60 years, the 1924-S has dropped a very long way from once being considered not only the rarest issue of the Saint-Gaudens series, but also the rarest of the entire denomination, surpassing the 1856-O, 1870-CC and the famous proof-only rarities of the 1880s. It was also considered more rare than the 1907 MCMVII Extremely High Relief, the 1927-D and the 1933, all of which are multi-million dollar coins today."

The 1924-S is still scarce in the near-Gem grade, and anything finer is a rarity; the Duckor Collection example was a Gem PCGS example -- one of two in that grade, with a single MS67 finer. This near-Gem is one of several dozen submissions in this grade. The surfaces show a well-detailed strike over peach-gold surfaces with accents of deeper reddish-orange near the centers. A scattering of small marks on Liberty's legs and elsewhere is in concert with the grade. The eye appeal is excellent.(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 26G9, PCGS# 9179)

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens as Illustrated by the Morse and Duckor Collections
Revised Edition by James L. Halperin, Mark R. Borckardt, Mark Van Winkle, Jon Amato, and Gregory J. Rohan, with special contributor David W. Akers

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens is an issue-by-issue examination of these two artistically inspired series of gold coins. Each date and mintmark is reviewed with up-to-date information, much of which has never been previously published. The book is based on two extraordinary collections: The Phillip H. Morse collection and the Dr. and Mrs. Steven L. Duckor collection.
