    1925-D Double Eagle, MS64
    Few Known Finer

1925-D $20 MS64 NGC. A radiant cartwheel effect delivers hints of rose and mint-green throughout otherwise yellow-gold and peach luster. The strike is sharp, and only light abrasions limit the grade. The 1925-D double eagle was heavily melted in the mid-1930s under President Roosevelt's executive gold recall order. Surviving Mint State coins largely reside in MS62 to MS64, after which there is a dramatic fall-off in availability. NGC and PCGS combined report only 16 Gem or finer 1925-D double eagles, which make infrequent auction appearances for prices well above $50,000. For a quality collection of Saint-Gaudens double eagles, it is difficult to beat the combination of eye appeal and value that the present Choice example offers. Census: 88 in 64 (3 in 64+, 2 in 64 ), 10 finer (6/18).(Registry values: N4719)

Due completely to Heritage's thoroughly diligent and professional management and promotion of the collection, the faraday Collection stirred national attention among numismatists and the auction results brought a gross value greater than that last estimated by the experienced collector.
