Attractive 1925-S Saint-Gaudens Twenty, MS62
1925-S $20 MS62 PCGS. Despite the hefty mintage of 3.8 million pieces, the 1925-S Saint-Gaudens double eagle is an elusive coin in all grades, and one of the scarcest issues of the series in Mint State. In A Guide Book of Double Eagle Gold Coins, Q. David Bowers estimates a surviving population of 300 to 500 examples in circulated grades, with a like number of specimens at Mint State levels. Most Uncirculated examples grade MS62, or lower.Catalogers recognized the scarcity of the issue at an early date. In one of its first auction appearances, in the Flanagan Collection (Stack's, 3/1944), lot 1675, the coin was described as:
"1925 'S' Uncirculated with somewhat polished surface, rare, seldom offered."
The present coin is a pleasing example, with lustrous surfaces and attractive orange-gold color. Some scattered handling marks are consistent with the grade.(Registry values: N4719)
