1926-D Double Eagle, AU58
1926-D $20 AU58 PCGS. Until the 1950s, the 1926-D
Saint-Gaudens double eagle was considered to be one of the rarest
issues of the series. The emergence of a few specimens in European
holdings altered the rarity rankings somewhat, but no large number
of coins has ever surfaced overseas. The 1926-D has gone from being
an impossible rarity to "just" a rare and underrated issue in
recent times, but most of the foreign discoveries were not
high-grade coins and the 1926-D remains the fourth-rarest issue of
the series in high grade.
Scarce Underrated Issue
The present coin is an attractive near-Mint example, with well-detailed design elements that show just the slightest trace of wear on the high points. The bright yellow and greenish-gold surfaces are lightly abraded, with vibrant mint luster and considerable eye appeal. This coin should find a home in a fine collection of Saint-Gaudens double eagles.(Registry values: N2998) (NGC ID# 26GE, PCGS# 9184)
