Description

Desired 1926-D Double Eagle, MS62

1926-D $20 MS62 PCGS. Q. David Bowers praises the 1926-D twenty in his Guide Book of Double Eagle Gold Coins, noting that "Today the 1926-D double remains very elusive, though hardly in the 'impossible' category. Most were probably retained in the United States and melted in the mid-1930s." He also calls it "one of the key issues of the Saint-Gaudens series, with only a few hundred known to exist." The present piece has straw-gold luster with strong orange overtones. A long abrasion is noted in the left obverse field, and several deep marks, possibly reed marks, affect Liberty's leg. Elsewhere, this coin has strong eye appeal of at least Select quality.(Registry values: N4719)
