Prized Select 1926-D Double Eagle

1926-D $20 MS63 PCGS. An attractive example of one of the key dates in the Saint-Gaudens double eagle series. It was once considered among the greatest rarities in the series, though in the 1950s and 1960s, many double eagles were found in European bank holdings. The 1926-D was never found in hoard quantities, but enough examples were discovered to topple the coin from its premier spot. In recent times, David Akers rated this issue as the thirteenth rarest coin in the 55-coin series.
Today, the 1926-D is almost always seen in MS60-MS63 grades. Circulated examples are curiously uncommon, and Gem specimens are very rare. Most coins seen are well struck, with only a little softness at the periphery. The present coin rates on the high end of the curve and has an above-average strike with just a touch of softness on the capitol dome and pillars. The fields display a scattering of small contact marks, consistent with the grade. The surfaces have unbroken, satiny luster that complements the bold devices to produce outstanding eye appeal.
