1926-S Double Eagle, MS64
1926-S $20 MS64 NGC. With a combined population in all
grades of 1,458 coins at ANACS, NGC, and PCGS, the 1926-S ranks
17th out of 52 issues for total population. That was not always the
case, as this issue was once considered a premier rarity in the
business strike series of collectible Saint-Gaudens double eagles.
The first edition of the Guide Book, dated 1947 and
published in 1946, valued the 1926-S at $900. For comparison, the
1926-D was $1,100, the 1927-D was $550, and the 1921, 1927-S, and
1931-D issues were $750 each. Those were the highest priced pieces
in that listing.
Once a Prime Rarity
This near-Gem has delicate green and pink toning over its satiny yellow-gold luster with a few scattered marks to prevent a higher grade. This is a highly attractive and important example, with only 24 finer pieces certified by NGC (10/12).(Registry values: N2998) (NGC ID# 26GF, PCGS# 9185)

Each date and mintmark is reviewed with up-to-date information, much of which has never been previously published. The book is based on
two extraordinary collections: The Phillip H. Morse collection and the Dr. and Mrs. Steven L. Duckor collection.
