Description
Elusive Near-Gem 1926-S Twenty
1926-S $20 MS64 PCGS. Although the 1926-S has a mintage of more than 2 million pieces, most of the production lingered in Treasury vaults until the FDR gold recall, which condemned those pieces to the smelter. The present near-Gem escaped such a fate, most likely exported to Europe as part of a foreign trade payment. This is a lustrous example that has a smooth obverse field and a sharp strike. The reverse has a thin mark that descends from the second S in STATES. A number of '26-S twenties eventually made their way back to the U.S. from foreign bank holdings, but the issue remains elusive.(Registry values: N2998)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 26GF, PCGS# 9185, GSID# 10183)
