Gem Mint State 1926-S Double Eagle
1926-S $20 MS65 PCGS. As is so often the case with branch
mint Saint-Gaudens double eagles of the 1920s, the government's
mass melting of gold coins of the subsequent decade put an
undeniable crimp in the future supply of the issue. At the Gem
level the 1926-S emerges as a condition rarity. This
yellow-to-orange example has substantial cartwheel luster that
flashes at certain angles to the light. While a touch of softness
is noted on Liberty's torch hand, this is an entirely appealing
coin, minimally abraded with only a few shallow luster scrapes.
