1927-S Twenty Dollar
1927-S $20 -- Cleaning -- PCGS Genuine. Unc. Details. The
1927-S has a mintage of 3,107,000 pieces, which should make it
plentiful in grades through Gem. However, all but a few hundred
examples never exited Treasury vaults, where they were held to back
gold certificate paper money. In due course, they were melted after
the 1933 Roosevelt gold recall, and made into bricks to line the
walls of Fort Knox. The present survivor has the eye appeal of an
MS63 example but the surfaces are mildly bright from a wipe.
Sharply struck and relatively lightly abraded. Interesting patches
of die lines, as made, are noted near the eagle's beak.
