Description

Sharply Defined 1927-S Twenty Dollar, MS62

1927-S $20 MS62 PCGS. CAC. The 1927-S is a well-produced late-series issue that at one time was believed to be the fourth-rarest Saint-Gaudens double eagle, behind the 1924-S, 1926-D, and 1926-S. Today, in Mint State the 1927-D is the rarest collectible Saint, and the 1927-S is in ninth place behind several other well-known series rarities, such as the 1920-S, the 1921, and the 1930-32 rarities.
The usual 1927-S displays excellent mint luster, and while the mint luster on the present MS62 example is not up to par compared to other 1927-S twenties, it is still above-average for the series. The strike is sharply defined throughout, with light orange-gold coloration predominant. A couple of medium-sized marks in the obverse fields account for the grade. Population: 33 in 62, 36 finer (1/11).(Registry values: N7079) (NGC ID# 26GJ, PCGS# 9188)

    Weight: 33.44 grams

    Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens as Illustrated by the Morse and Duckor Collections
Revised Edition by James L. Halperin, Mark R. Borckardt, Mark Van Winkle, Jon Amato, and Gregory J. Rohan, with special contributor David W. Akers

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens is an issue-by-issue examination of these two artistically inspired series of gold coins. Each date and mintmark is reviewed with up-to-date information, much of which has never been previously published. The book is based on two extraordinary collections: The Phillip H. Morse collection and the Dr. and Mrs. Steven L. Duckor collection.
