Rare, Seldom Offered 1927-S Twenty Dollar in Brilliant Uncirculated

1927-S $20 MS 61 NGC. With flashy, swirling mint luster and bright, golden-rose color, this lovely coin has the eye appeal of a significantly higher grade. There are scattered abrasions on both sides, but a small alloy spot in the left obverse field is the only singularly mentionable distraction. Powerfully impressed with crisply defined features.
The 1927-S was once regarded as the fourth rarest issue in the Saint-Gaudens double eagle series. In recent years, however, enough examples have been repatriated from Europe to lower the overall rarity ranking of this issue. Nevertheless, the absence of sizeable hoards assures that the 1927-S remains scarcer than the other branch mint issues from the 1920s with the exception of the 1920-S and 1927-D.
    From the Conrad Sommers Collection.
