Description

Heavily Melted 1929 Double Eagle Rarity, Incredible Gem Level of Preservation

1929 $20 MS 65 PCGS. This P-mint issue commences a run of major rarities that continues through the end of the Saint Gaudens series. As with most of the heavily melted issues in this series, the 1929 is most often located in About Uncirculated or low Mint State grades. MS 64 survivors are elusive and full Gem representatives are the province of only the most advanced gold collectors. As befits the issue, this coin displays razor sharp definition and frosty, golden-rose surfaces. Both sides are smooth and indicative of the grade. NGC and PCGS combined report only 16 examples in MS 65 with a lone MS 66 PCGS specimen finer (9/99). (NGC ID# 26GL, PCGS# 9190)

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens as Illustrated by the Morse and Duckor Collections
Revised Edition by James L. Halperin, Mark R. Borckardt, Mark Van Winkle, Jon Amato, and Gregory J. Rohan, with special contributor David W. Akers

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens is an issue-by-issue examination of these two artistically inspired series of gold coins. Each date and mintmark is reviewed with up-to-date information, much of which has never been previously published. The book is based on two extraordinary collections: The Phillip H. Morse collection and the Dr. and Mrs. Steven L. Duckor collection.
