    1932 Saint-Gaudens Twenty, MS63
    Last Collectible Issue

1932 $20 MS63 PCGS. Ex: David & Jeannie Cheung Collection. As the final collectible double eagle in U.S. coinage history, the 1932 Saint-Gaudens double eagle is one of the true legends of numismatics. All of the last five collectible issues of the Saint-Gaudens double eagle series, the 1929, 1930-S, 1931, 1931-D, and 1932, are rare because of their proximity to the Gold Recall of 1933 and the subsequent melting of nearly all the gold coins minted during this period, enhancing the desirability of the issues among advanced gold specialists.

Research conducted in the Mint records by Dr. Charles W. Green in the 1940s indicates that only 110 examples of the 1932 Saint-Gaudens double eagle were released through official channels before the fatal presidential order took effect. Few, if any, examples of the 1932 have been found in European banks or other foreign holdings. Fortunately, Philadelphia jeweler Izzy Switt, of 1933 double eagle fame, seems to have marketed a small hoard of 1931 and 1932 double eagles among East Coast dealers in the late 1930s and early 1940s, providing a small supply of high-grade coins for future collectors.

Nicely frosted with a cartwheel sheen, this piece displays orange-gold color overall, with areas of yellow-gold also present. The surfaces of this coin display no more than the expected number of abrasions for the grade, with a mark appearing on Liberty's face. This coin is housed in an old green label holder.
