Description

1908-D Motto Double Eagle, MS65
Seldom Offered Finer, Mint Anomaly

1908-D $20 Motto -- Reverse Struck Thru -- MS65 NGC. Long Rays Obverse. This Gem 1908-D Motto twenty displays frosty medium-gold surfaces that reveal only a few tiny marks and virtually no post-Mint abrasions. The NGC holder indicates a reverse strike through, although that anomaly carries over to the obverse where it affects several stars above and near the Capitol building. We believe the areas in question represent a slight planchet clip or other thin-planchet irregularity. Possibly, a wrap-around strike through exists (grease or other foreign matter). In any case, errors on gold coinage and double eagles in particular are rare and interesting. Overall, NGC has certified only 19 numerically finer 1908-D Motto double eagles plus two pieces in 65+ (6/25).(Registry values: N2998)
