    Description

    1908-D Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle, MS65
    Long Rays, No Motto Variant

1908-D $20 No Motto MS65 PCGS. Both Short Rays and Long Rays varieties exist for the 1908-D No Motto twenties, as opposed to the 1908-D With Motto coins, which all have Long Rays. Research by Roger Burdette indicates approximately 40% of the 1908-D No Motto survivors have the 1908 Long Rays redesign by Charles Barber. Typically, the Long Rays coins are better-struck than the Short Rays coins.

The present coin is a sharply defined and attractive piece with vibrant cartwheel luster and interspersed areas of orange, reddish-gold, and canary-yellow toning. The eagle's breast feathers show full details. A few shallow field lines beneath LIBERTY are the sole marks of note. PCGS reports just 13 numerically finer pieces (9/16).
