Description
1926-S Double Eagle, MS65
Mass-Melted San Francisco Issue
1926-S $20 MS65 PCGS. Of the 2 million double eagles
manufactured at the San Francisco Mint in 1926, it is believed that
only 2,000 pieces survived the mass meltings that took place after
the Gold Recall of 1933. Most of the examples that avoided
destruction derive from overseas repatriations and show scattered
bagmarks, typically grading between MS62 and MS64. This is an
exceptional Gem, minimally abraded with marvelous golden-orange
surfaces and radiant mint luster. Well-defined, except on the
Capitol dome, with minor "vault dirt" above CA in AMERICA.
Population: 40 in 65 (2 in 65+), 4 finer (9/19).(Registry values: N7079)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 26GF, PCGS# 9185, Greysheet# 10183)
