Description

Token Coinage Copper Keping "1841", KM-Tn1. This token has the surfaces of an XF coin, but, due to the strike, it has the details of a VF coin. Entirely in line with the many Singapore merchant issues struck around this time. The obverse has a badger facing left; under it are the initials J.B. (James Brooke) and the date SEPt 24 1841. The badger, or brock, is derived from the crest of the Brooke arms. The reverse one Keping 1241 (AD1831) in Arabic. These were not authorized until 1842 and were struck in Birmingham, England using an old reverse die from one of the Singapore merchants. As with many 'token' issues of the era, it would have been impossible to have a fixed value on this piece so its 'value' would fluctuate with the price of copper and the need for change. There is a flan flaw in the 4 of the date, and two minor reverse laminations. The Remick example, in similar condition, brought £4,200 plus the buyer's fees.
