Description

Abd al-Aziz bin Sa'ud "S.S. John Barry" Riyal AH 1354 (1935) AU (Shipwreck Effect), Philadelphia mint, KM18. Accompanied by COA and promotional VCR. Salvaged from the "S.S. John Barry" (sunk in 1944 in the Arabian Sea during World War II).

The S.S. John Barry was a WWII cargo ship that was sunk in the Arabian Sea on August 28th, 1944, by a German U-Boat torpedo. The ship carried a cargo of approximately 3 million American-minted Saudi Riyal coins as an American payment associated with ARAMCO (Arabian American Oil Company). In 1994, with the help of deep-dive machinery, approximately 1.3 million Saudi Riyals were recovered that weighed a staggering 17 tons. Today, the majority of the remaining original cargo is yet to be discovered.
