Mary, Queen of Scots (1542-1567) & Henry Darnley Ryal 1567 MS63 NGC, Edinburgh mint, S-5425, Burns-pg. 340, 7 (Fig. 906), cf. SCBI XXXV-1125 (with countermark). 30.39gm. Fourth Period. • MARIA • & • HENRIC' • DEI • GRA • R • & • R • SCOTORV •, crowned royal Scottish shield, flanked by two thistles / (thistle) • EXVRGAT • DEVS • & • DISSIPENTR (T over R) INIMIC (I over C) • EI (crook-shaped abbreviation), land tortoise climbing crowned palm tree; DAT GLORIA VIRES on scroll. An extraordinarily rare date for this already highly popular 'Crookeston Dollar' type--so-called after an invented legend that Mary and Henry's courtship had taken place under the famous yew at Crookeston Castle--not least as it was the year of Henry's murder and Mary's execution under Elizabeth I. Missing from the Douglas, LaRiviere, and Dundee collections, this year is one of just three the type was produced, with most of the surviving Ryals from the period later countermarked with a thistle and revalued in 1578 during the reign of James VI. Ringed in russet color that melts into lapis lazuli towards the center of the obverse (reverse as holdered), the piece on offer here ranks a full 8 grade points above the next contender at NGC, with recent sales records suggesting only two others have appeared at auction in recent years--both from the William E. Trieste Collection and about VF, only one of which was un-countermarked (lot 590).
