Description

Renfrewshire - Port Glasgow. Alexander Steven & Sons Counterstamped 4 Shillings 6 Pence ND (c. 1820) Fine 12 PCGS, KM-CC91, Manville-89. Countermark: 4/6 within corded border surrounded by: "A. Steven & Sons. PT Glasgow" (XF Details); Host: Mexico Ferdinand VII 8 Reales 1817 Mo-JJ. Part of a popular series of Scottish counterstamped merchant coinage using Spanish Colonial (often Mexican) hosts. The present piece marks the first occurrence of this rare issuer with our firm; less than ten recorded examples are known to be in existence to this day. The Mexican host is heavily worn but the countermark is quite sharp, almost more poignant in appearance upon the mostly smooth background surfaces.

Metal: Silver
Diameter: 38.5mm
