    Description

Finest Known 1837 Large Date Dime, MS68 NGC

1837 10C Large Date MS68 NGC. The new Gobrecht design that was implemented on the half dimes and dimes of 1837 represented a technological breakthrough for the Mint. These were the first coins the U.S. Mint had produced where all the details except the date were produced from a complete hub. The Large Date variants of 1837 were the first produced of the new design, and relatively large numbers were set aside of this type. Probably around 200 examples are known today in the various states of Uncirculated, but this single coin is the finest certified by either of the major services. Magnification shows this to be a virtually perfect coin--we see no reportable imperfections on either side of this impressive piece. The surfaces display thick mint luster that is unaffected by the several layers of toning that cover each side. Rich mauve and emerald-green patina is interspersed over both obverse and reverse in a spectacular configuration that speaks to the unquestionable originality of this finest known 1837 Seated dime.(#4561) (Registry values: N1) (NGC ID# 237R, PCGS# 4561)
