Description

1837 No Stars, Small Date Dime, MS65+ CAC
F-103a; Top 100 Variety

1837 10C No Stars, Small Date, F-103a, R.3, MS65+ PCGS. CAC. Untoned surfaces contain deep, satiny luster that gleams from every angle. Strike is needle sharp, with full definition on the head, drapery, leaves, and dentils on both sides. A small nick in the lower right obverse field is all that keeps this coin from Premium Gem status. A CAC sticker is the result of this confluence of superlative qualities.

Two major varsities exist for 1837 dimes: Large Date and Small Date. The latter, represented here, is significantly scarcer than the former, which is one of the most common Type I Liberty Seated dimes. In addition to this scarcity, the specific variety of Small Date dime represented here, F-103a, is one of Fortin's Top 100 Varieties. The 7 is centered over a dentil and it exhibits a reverse that is rotated 23 degrees and cracked horizontally from the left rim to ONE DIME. The small certified population in Gem means this coin exhibits these features better than almost any other. Population (Small Date): 1 in 65+, 6 finer. CAC: 6 in 65, 4 finer (12/25).
